Research Services

Researchers are welcome to visit the archives during our public service hours Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 9pm, and Fridays from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.  CLGA will be closed December 23, 2017 to January 1, 2018. Regular public service hours will resume January 2, 2018.

Some of our materials are stored off site. Before visiting the archives, please send us an email at queeries@clga.ca listing in detail the topics and sources that you wish to consult and we will let you know when they will be available.

Material held by the CLGA is open to the public; however some collections may have restrictions based on individuals’ privacy, donor specific restrictions and the condition of the material.  AV material is only available for viewing when materials can withstand being played. The CLGA regrets that it is unable to make reproductions of moving image records at this time.

Please note that the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives does not permit researchers to bring or use any personally-owned scanning equipment (i.e. flatbed scanners). Researchers are permitted to use digital cameras, including smart phones.  Digital images are for research and study purposes only and cannot be reproduced, published, exhibited or broadcasted without permission and additional fees may apply.

Please contact the CLGA directly to request permission to publish, exhibit or use records and to determine the appropriate acknowledgement(s). Failure to seek appropriate permissions and/or provide adequate acknowledgements is a violation of copyright law.

If you are unable conduct research during our public service hours at 34 Isabella Street, Toronto, we now offer research assistance remotely for a set fee.  Research will commence and the results will be sent once payment is received.

Single-use fee $10
Annual Reader Card (unlimited research visits for one year) $35
Photocopying (letter / legal size) $0.15 per page
Photocopying (ledger size) $0.25 per page
Scanning fee (photographs and other
high-resolution images)*
$20 per image

Use of Digital Cameras and Scanners by Researchers

Please note that the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives does not permit researchers to bring or use any personally-owned scanning equipment (i.e. flatbed scanners). Researchers are permitted to use digital cameras.

If you are unable conduct research during our public service hours at 34 Isabella Street, Toronto, we now offer research assistance remotely for the following fee schedule:

REMOTE RESEARCH FEES
Honorarium for archivist to conduct research (subject to availability of researchers) $50 per hour
Scanning Fee (photographs and other images)* $20 per image
Scanning Fee (text/documents to compact pdf)* $1 per page
CD of scans delivered by regular mail (outside of Canada additional postage will be required) $5 per disc

* these can be delivered electronically at no additional fee.

 

PUBLICATION, EXHIBITION AND USE FEES
Commercial Use Fee (for one-time use, per image) $100
Non-Commercial Use Fee (for one-time use, per image) $25

 

RETRIEVAL FEES
Retrieval of original paper copies
(for which microfilm and/or digital copies are available)
$50
Retrieval of any materials stored off-site Cost recovery at time of order

Moving image footage is available for viewing only, and only when materials can withstand being played and cannot be duplicated for remote viewing.

Research will commence and the results will be sent once payment is received.

The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives is located on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishnaabe and the Huron-Wendat. Today, Toronto is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

The CLGA strives to gather the stories of the unheard and silenced voices of the 2SLGBTQ+ first peoples of this land. We acknowledge that some stories have already been lost, and we aim to ensure that those that remain and those that are to come are preserved for the future.
