Gens Hellquist started the first queer organization in Saskatoon in 1971. A founding director of Gay & Lesbian Health Services of Saskatoon, he was also the founder and current Editor of "Perceptions" (Canada's longest running gay/lesbian publication). He was involved in the formation of many other queer community organizations in Saskatoon, in Saskatchewan and Canada, He was awarded the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2005.
