The first mainstream book on homosexuality published in Canada -- pseudonymously authored and critically received by a young and growing gay liberation movement. Both the book and the review are characteristic of their time -- a period of shifting public and personal perceptions of gay life. Appx 1,200 words, including an introduction.
This is the second edition of Gary's book (the first appeared in 1987) -- but it remains the only major historical study of sexuality in Canada. Karen Dubinsky notes new richness in this edition -- and gaps in Canadian sexual historiography that still need attention. Appx 1,450 words.
A study (the only book-length one to date on a single Canadian lesbian or gay group) on the Lesbian Organization of Toronto (LOOT, 1976 - 1980) -- short-lived but hugely influential. Amy, who was a member, examines this '90s queer take on '70s lesbian separatism -- with some words on the risks and rewards of oral history. Appx 1,700 words, introduction included.
