Photographs
Until early 1974, most photographs in The Body Politic were by Jearld Moldenhauer. Photo credits for Gerald Hannon first appeared in # 5, Jul / Aug 1972; Gerald remained the paper's most consistent photographer into the mid-1980s.
Over time, many other people contributed photos. Some did so as members of TBP's editorial working groups (mostly News): anyone who could hoist a camera might be called on to take pictures. Others worked as freelancers -- unpaid, except occasionally for materials. Among them: Bill Loos, Lynnie Johnston, Jake Peters, Elinor Mahoney, Konnie Reich, Debbie Bloomfield, Richard W Brown, Clara Cirasella, jean-denis lacroix, Peter Fitzwilliam, Jeff Woods -- and myself. Many out- of- town correspondents took news shots; Rink (Keal) of San Francisco was a regular photo contributor.
Professional artists and photographers whose work usually appeared in other media (or in exhibitions) also showed up in TBP, often doing news or set-up shots. Among those: Ric Amis, Robin Collyer, Ted Hebbes, Frank Rooney, Norman Hatton, William Deacon, David Rasmus, and David Blair (later known as David Silvercloud).
An ad in # 59, Dec 1979 / Jan 1980 -- featuring a wonderful press conference shot by Philip Hannan of Ottawa -- solicited people for a Photographers Group: this didn't get off the ground until early 1983 and didn't last long. Among its members was Chuck Grochmal, who stayed only a few months but returned in the late 1980s as a columnist for Xtra. Another was Lee Lyons, on the scene through the mid-1980s.
Many photos in TBP's review section, and in Out in the City, were publicity shots taken by people not otherwise connected with the paper. The World News section often lifted images from other gay papers -- as they did from TBP. Such mutual sharing was common among movement publications -- with credit usually given but permission rarely sought and no fees paid.
This largesse couldn't always be counted on in the wider world: TBP twice got in trouble for using images with credit but without permission: from the National Film Board for the cover of # 23, Apr 1976; and from the Robert Desrosier Dance Company, for a subscription ad on the back cover of the May 1985 issue.
The Body Politic was often very text-heavy. But substantial photo (and graphic) illustration accompanied many features, reviews and even some news stories: national conferences before 1980 sometimes generated photo spreads; from 1981, lesbian and gay pride celebrations often did. There were also occasional photo essays, with images the dominant (and sometimes sole) element:
From Issue 115, Jun 1985, TBP also solicited photos to be featured in the classified ad pages, as Hot Pix. Work appeared there by: Robin Budd, David Blair, Ruthann Tucker, Konnie Reich, Lisa Crouch, Doug Grenville, Ryan Hotchkiss, Norman Hatton, Richard Plowright, Mark Brickell, Artemis, Daniel Collins, and Allyson McLaughlin.
The accessions listed below hold much -- but not all -- photographic material originating with TBP and the Press. For more, see An Inventory of Photographs Received in the Canadian Gay Archives between 1973 and the end of 1987 (described in the Archives website page on photo inventories.) Some of the photographers named above also have personal holdings in the Archives.
