Editorials

The first editorial in The Body Politic (flagged Headitorial) appeared in Issue 2 (Jan / Feb 1972). Almost every subsequent issue contained at least one editorial, until the mid-'80s when their appearance became less regular. Xtra, meant to be less overtly political, didn't run any (but for rare exceptions) until the mid-1990s. Editorials were genuine collective efforts. Ideas for them were discussed at collective meetings, a draft was produced and circulated for comments, and the final version had to meet everyone's approval.

Editorials are, of course, a valuable guide to the collective's politics over time and its positions on various issues of concern to the wider community. Some early ones also talk about the operations of The Body Politic itself (see Footnote 2 in Series 1: Policies, planning and budgetting). In another space, called This Issue, first appearing in # 39 (Dec 1977 / Jan 1978; from Oct 1978 incorporated with each issue's contents page), we more regularly offered reflections on our internal workings.
