Comics, art and illustration
The first six issues of The Body Politic used many drawings by Amerigo Marras, who was with Kensingon Art Associates (TBP's neighbour on Kensington Ave) and later went on to the Centre for Experimental Art and Communication (at 15 Duncan St, not far from TBP's 1976-1983 office). Founding collective member Alan Falconer's deco- style frame for the Community Page (see Listings) and caricature of John Forbes as "Twilight Rose" (see Columns) ran through # 8 (Spring 1973).
TBP's longest-running graphic relationship began with a big illustration on page 1 of Issue 4 (May / Jun 1972) by Gary Ostrom. Gary was a collective member from early 1976 to mid-1978, but from 1972 through 1986 he graced TBP's pages with absurdist wit in a variety of graphic styles and sizes, from column- fillers to 2-page spreads. Four of his single- frame cartoons and one segment of his series "Homos at War" appear in the 1982 TBP anthology Flaunting It!.
Paul Aboud came to TBP, from high school, in 1975. He was later an animation student at Sheridan College. Paul's work was more topical: two of his takes on police raids appear in Flaunting It!. An office volunteer for many years, Paul served on the collective, and on paid staff in production, in 1984.
Other illustrators whose work appeared in TBP include: Chris Gentles; Matthias Ostermann; Fiona Rattray; Lynda Hurst; Erick Querci; Steve Russell; David Vereschagin; Tony Hamilton; Adrienne Matte; Renata Janiszewski; and Ian King. From the Oct 1986 issue, US cartoonist Tom Hatchman's full- page "Gertrude's Follies" (Stein, Toklas and company) ran regularly.
We once also scouted the sexual orientation of some classic superheroes, in playwright Brad Fraser's "Coming out in the comics," Jul / Aug 1984.
The Body Politic occasionally featured other artists' works, including: Darryl Tonkin; Ger Brender à Brandis; David Aldrich; Claire Weissman Wilks; Rob Flack; the artist- collective JAC (John Grube, Alex Liros and Clarence Barnes); and another local trio more internationally known, General Idea (AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal).
A major feature on video and performance art appeared in the June 1980 issue. In Issue 100 (Jan / Feb 1984), TBP ran its only full- colour pages (financed by a donation from readers David Hingsburger and Joe Jobes), showcasing the work of Matt Gould, Tony Wilson and Nancy Johnson. Occasional photo essays are noted under Series 23: Photographs.
In addition to the accessions listed below, much graphic material is stored flat in a map cabinet. See Series 25: Posters and artwork.
