Ryerson Declines to Renew Hannon Contract

Last revised... Tuesday 24 September 1996
Ryerson University has decided not to re-hire Gerald Hannon this autumn. Hannon and Ryerson had been embroiled in controversy when reports of part-time prostitution and his writings on pedophila first came out. He was suspended, reinstated and reprimanded by Ryerson.

The Toronto Star Link opens in a new browser window on 6 June 1996 (p. A24) quoted Hannon as saying 'They're embarrassed by me. They don't want the heat. But now they're guaranteeing a longer fight.'

John Miller, chairman of the journalism department, said 'I will not discuss personnel matters. I will only say that we are very happy with the candidates we chose and are prepared to defend our decision', according to the Star. (The paper placed its article next to another news item headlined 'Teacher touched girls, court told'.)
