Out in Ottawa

Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere (EGALE)
If you've paid any attention to the ongoing legal and political struggles for gay and lesbian rights in Canada, you've probably heard of EGALE. This link will open in a new browser window We talk with Executive Director John Fisher about his organization's work in getting "sexual orientation" added to the Canadian Human Rights Act, adding bashing of lesbians and gays to federal hate crime statutes, and intervening before the Supreme Court of Canada in support of same-sex relationship recognition.

Pink Triangle Services, Pink Triangle Youth and the Youth Services Board
We hook up with members from three Ottawa organizations that provide not just support to the queer community, but a place for that community to flourish. Chirstyn LaChance of the PTS' Pink Triangle Youth This link will open in a new browser window (PTY) program discusses how her group helps queer and queer-questioning youth under the age of 25. Ottawa Pride
More than 20,000 people attended last year's Pride celebrations in Ottawa, and they're getting ready to shake things up again this year. We catch up with Ottawa Pride This link will open in a new browser window Co-Chairs Yvon Vaillant and Marion Steele about the upcoming ten days of events celebrating the contributions and pride in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Coral Reef Club
If you were looking for the oldest existing gay bar in North America, you probably wouldn't search for it in Ottawa, but shucks, that's where we found the Coral Reef Club. We talk with Alex Wiwsniowski (who is also President of the Association of Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Ottawa This link will open in a new browser window - Canada's oldest existing GLBT organization, founded by Charlie Hill in 1971 as the "Gays of Ottawa") about the club and its history.

University of Ottawa Pride Center, Carleton University GLBT Center and Algonquin College's GLBT Center
If there was ever any doubt that Ottawa is a gay old town, look no further than the city's three leading post-secondary educational institutions to find that queers are everywhere.
